CHAPTER 6

DECEMBER 1999

By the grace of God, I made it out of Philly in one piece after the shooting. Even with my face on the television screen I was able to call a cab and get a ride all the way across the bridge. First, I put on Tommy’s old black Polo hoodie and pulled it extra tight around my face. Then I sat low in the back seat and just prayed that the cab driver didn’t get suspicious. In the end though, the cab driver was like most working class people; he was just trying to get paid. So even if he did recognize my face, I doubt he would have called the police. The cabbie charged us $125, plus the money for toll to get back to Jersey, but it was worth it. With the situation I was in, I really didn’t have any other option.

Toni was still furious with me, but somehow we managed to maintain. After all, I needed her there with me. Now, I had Lashawna to look after too. This was something that I simply couldn’t do by myself. Our household was absolutely crazy, with two little babies running around. Naturally, Lashawna couldn’t understand what was going on. She had no idea where her Mom was, and truthfully neither did I. The latest on Maya was that she had to have an emergency surgery to remove a bullet that was close to her spine. We got that info from some mutual acquaintances of her and Toni’s from Philly. Because of the circumstances surrounding her shooting, the hospital wasn’t giving out any information on her condition.

More upset about the situation than anyone was Miss Noonie. Maya always held a spot in her heart because of her relationship with Miss Noonie’s late son. She viewed Maya as a daughter in law since she had been off and on with Tommy for years. The fact that Maya was sitting in a hospital fighting for her life due to my negligence did not sit well with Miss Noonie. I know part of Miss Noonie probably wanted to turn me in to the law, but luckily she didn’t, on the strength of Toni. Miss Noonie knew that it would devastate Toni if I was arrested, so she kept all that she knew about me shooting Maya and Jeremy to herself.

I laid as low as I possibly could out in Willingboro, New Jersey. I stayed in the house almost 24/7 out of fear that someone would recognize my face from the news broadcast which had been a few weeks back. After all, Willingboro was just a few minutes away from Philly. The same newscasts came on TV in South Jersey that did in Philadelphia. I had to stay out of sight, because the police showing up at my door and arresting me for murder would be a true tragedy. I had so much dirt that traced back to me that any case I caught would be crucial for me. Saying
